Groundbreaker® Ruby™ (Hydrangea paniculata 'LC NO27' PBRAF) is the next installment in the groundbreaking Groundbreaker® groundcover series from the award-winning Dutch LivingCreations® collection – the world's first family of groundcover groundcover hydrangeas. 'Ruby' is a version for lovers of strong, saturated colors: its blooms turn a deep, ruby-red shade throughout the season, giving it its name. Instead of climbing upwards, the plant spreads sideways, creating a low, dense carpet of flowers. It grows to only about 30–40 cm tall and 60–80 cm wide, blooming from July to the end of September (up to 100 days per season), and is fully frost-hardy (down to -30°C), allowing it to be planted throughout Poland without winter protection.
The cultivar 'Ruby' forms a low, compact, spreading shrub with strong, well-branched stems that securely support numerous conical inflorescences just above the ground. Dark green, ovate leaves provide a dense backdrop against which ruby red blooms are particularly striking. The flowers are white at the initial stage of bloom, and as the season progresses – from September onwards – they become more intensely colored, fading through pink to a deep, ruby-red finish. After blooming, the dried inflorescences remain on the shrub and adorn the garden well into autumn and winter. They are also excellent for cut flowers and dried bouquets.
Thanks to its exceptionally low, creeping habit, Groundbreaker® Ruby™ is an ideal solution where classic hydrangeas are too tall: as a flowering groundcover, for slopes, borders, and the front lines of flowerbeds, for large pots, bowls, and balcony boxes, and for greening difficult, sunny areas.
