Pinus nigra 'Marie Brégeon' is a dwarf, slow-growing cultivar of the Austrian pine, characterized by a remarkably dense, spherical habit and soft, dark green foliage. Originating as a witch's broom mutation, this cultivar maintains a naturally compact and uniform shape without the necessity for regular formative pruning. The needles are long, stiff, and arranged in pairs, providing a rich, evergreen texture throughout the entire year. Due to its miniature scale, typically reaching a height and spread of approximately 60 to 100 centimeters after ten years, it serves as an exceptional structural element for refined garden compositions, rockeries, minimalist landscapes, and container cultivation on terraces and balconies.

Cultivation Requirements and Habitat

Pinus nigra 'Marie Brégeon' exhibits high environmental tolerance and thrives best in full sun exposures, which ensure optimal needle coloration and maximal density of the crown. The species prefers well-drained, permeable soils ranging from sandy-loam to clay-loam, with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH, although it adapts successfully to moderately acidic substrates. Once established, the plant demonstrates significant drought resistance and tolerates urban pollution as well as strong winds, making it suitable for difficult urban sites. The root system requires moderate moisture without water stagnation, as excess moisture in heavy soils may lead to root rot. No specialized pruning is required, though gentle candle pinching in spring can be applied to further increase branching density. The cultivar is fully hardy in moderate climate zones.
