Pinus heldreichii 'Smidtii' on an 80 cm stem is a dwarf, slow-growing cultivar of the Bosnian pine, characterized by a dense, perfectly spherical crown grafted onto a clear trunk. The needles are rigid, dark green, glossy, and densely arranged around the shoots, retaining their coloration throughout the year. Due to its miniature growth habit and formal, architectural form, this specimen is particularly suited for refined garden compositions, contemporary landscape designs, and container cultivation on terraces and patios.

Requirements and Cultivation

The cultivar requires a fully illuminated, sunny position to maintain its compact habit and needle density. It demonstrates high tolerance to poor soil conditions, successfully establishing itself in sandy, rocky, or moderately fertile substrates, provided they are exceptionally well-drained. Pinus heldreichii 'Smidtii' exhibits complete frost hardiness and high resistance to urban pollution as well as strong winds. Watering should be moderate, limited to periods of prolonged drought, as the root system is highly sensitive to waterlogging. Pruning is generally not required, though light directional candling in spring may be applied to further densify the crown.
